KOREA YAKULT
Distributed Protection
Enterprises today are often distributed across locations to take advantage of geographical advantages, with staff and business partners connecting to their networks remotely over the Internet (unlike yesteryear counterparts forced to rely on less efficient or reliable means of communications). However, the ease with which offices and staff can reach out and touch one another also increases threats against corporate infrastructure. The daily challenge faced by companies such as Korea Yakult is protecting against attacks while leveraging the value of the Internet.
Founded in 1969, Korea Yakult is one of South Korea's largest food products manufacturers and best-known for fermented milk products. Increased demand by staff for remote access, coupled with the need to reinforce its security stance, spurred the company to upgrade its remote access solution.
After conducting usability testing on a variety of solutions, Korea Yakult decided on the Juniper Networks ISG2000 and SA5060A security appliances. "We chose Juniper because we are already familiar with the company's thoroughly reliable solutions – we've been using NetScreen 20, 25, and 100 firewalls since 1997 – and because the ISG2000 and SA5060A outperformed all other solutions we tested," said Hyungsup Kim, manager of Korea Yakult's Information Systems Team. "We needed to improve our security to cope with increasing network attacks against our infrastructure (our earlier security system could not keep up) but we also did not want the new system to be an administrative nightmare. The Juniper products were able to maintain high performance without compromising comprehensive security protection; other vendor solutions slowed down when advanced security options were enabled."
Ease of management was a primary reason behind Korea Yakult's choice of the ISG2000. "By providing an integrated set of security features under a singly-managed, easy to use interface, the ISG2000 offers an excellent balance between ease of administration and comprehensive security protection," added Mr Kim.
As for the decision to deploy a SSL VPN solution, Korea Yakult concluded it would be more cost efficient to leverage SSL VPN and end of life its legacy IPSec-based VPN solution. "We had acquired two other companies, and this further increased our need to deploy secure remote access to a large number of staff," said Mr Kim. "We needed massive network protection for a distributed enterprise: Our company has many remote sites staffed with only a handful of employees and it is impossible to justify the effort and resources needed to manage IPSec deployments for all these locations. We also have many workers on business trips abroad and they need an easy to use VPN solution that did not require manual installation of client software or tedious troubleshooting support."
The ISG2000 was effective as soon as it was deployed. The SSL VPN solution took longer due to the setting of complex user group permissions and integrating the solution with Korea Yakult's many client-server applications. This process was eased by the Juniper management interface, Mr Kim explained.
The management interface – Juniper's Secure Application Manager (SAM) – was "very easy to use, unmatched by any other product and allows us to view important statistics such as the number of concurrent users, system performance and CPU load, as well as gain better visibility in our network activity."
Korea Yakult is very impressed by the new security system and is looking at integrating it with the company employee directory database to obtain even stronger authentication capability. With the addition of this component to the Juniper solution, Korea Yakult feels it will have probably the best network security solution available.
